As you’ve probably noticed, there has been an influx of products on the market boasting that they contain hyaluronic acid. It is a common ingredient in skin care products that claim to be naturally anti-aging and are said to improve skin’s texture, but is the stuff really as magical as labels make it out to be? Well, it might be. Here’s why.

Hyaluronic Acid is Produced Naturally in Your Skin
It keeps your skin hydrated and maintains elasticity, which we all can agree is pretty important. Hyaluronic acid is the stuff that gives skin that plump, youthful appearance that we are all after! This is because it works wonders to help your skin maintain moisture levels, fill fine lines, and keep skin looking radiant. Hyaluronic acid also helps your skin actually absorb moisturizer that you apply. This is especially awesome because it can allow you to use less product and get more for your money!

Hyaluronic Acid Production Decreases with Age
Younger skin has more natural hyaluronic acid, and the concentration of it in the skin gradually decreases as the years go by. Mature skin begins to lose its elasticity, collagen, and tends to be more on the dry side, so using products that protect against these signs of aging will obviously give your skin a more youthful appearance. Luckily, hyaluronic acid helps with all three of these common signs of aging! Adding a product with hyaluronic acid early on, at the fist signs of aging, can help maintain plump, youthful skin naturally!

Increasing Hyaluronic Acid Production
To add the magic, there are actually ways to increase hyaluronic more permanently, as opposed to adding it back to your skin using creams, serums, and masks! There are a few simple ways to do this.

  • Drinking broth, especially chicken broth is said to increase the natural production of hyaluronic acid.
  • Our favorite antioxidant, resveratrol, is also said to increase hyaluronic acid production! Red wine, as most of us know and greatly appreciate, has a high concentration of resveratrol.
  • A much more expensive route is getting hyaluronic injections, but these can be painful and very pricey, so we would try other methods first!

As magically as hyaluronic acid seems, there is one catch: your body needs magnesium to absorb it. This may seem like a lot to think about. The good news is, you don’t have to look far to find some! Magnesium oil is readily available, and there are also several recipes that you can find online for making your own magnesium facial spray. Many fruits and vegetables are rich in magnesium, and several different kinds of beans can also give you a healthy dose, so look for foods with a high magnesium content during your next trip to the grocery store! You can also take magnesium supplements, many of which claim to help with bone and muscle health. Be sure to add magnesium to your diet plan- your skin will thank you!
