So you're expecting and you want to break the news…
Perhaps the most commonly believed beauty secret about about Cleopatra is her allegiance to milk and honey baths for maintaining her soft skin. According to legend, Cleopatra’s daily baths in the natural mixture was responsible for the glowing skin and seductive beauty that brought men like Marc Antony to their knees. But keep in mind, this milk was not the ones that you are likely to see on the shelves of your favorite grocery store. No, this was donkeys’ milk and, in order to keep the Egyptian pharaoh well supplied, she was said to have had a whopping 700 donkeys stocked at her pad, including a select few that accompanied her on her travels. This may not seem that surprising: after all when you find something that works, you stick with it. But, donkeys may not be your first choice for a travel companion; they tend to kick a lot, among other things, ahem.
If you are looking to keep your skin soft and smooth, you may be able to do this without the donkey herd. Here are some tips for great shower fresh skin without the hefty cleanup.
The Sexy Back
Never underestimate the power of a great exit. Be it backside, back, or backs of legs, out less seen sides deserves attention as well. To prevent back breakouts, try using an antibacterial cleanser and, for the backs of arms, alpha or beta hydroxy lotions can smooth away those bumps on your elbows (a.k.a. keratosis pillars.) David Bank, MD warns against over scrubbing as it may only make the situation worse.
The Killer Neck
According to Adrienne Denese, MD, Ph. D., “Your neck ages in its own ways and so has specials needs….the thin easy-to-scar skin in this area doesn’t respond to lasers and peels as well as your face does.” Denese informs, “If your posture is excellent, your neck will age well,” and stretching your neck can also help. Neck specific products are available, the most effective of which will contain ingredients like peptides, retinol and glycol acid.
In the opinion of Rebecca Aspan, owner of Manhattan Lingerie Shop La Petite Coquette, a great chest requires a lot of moisturizing and a dusting of shimmer. In addition to bras with superpowers, there are many creams and gels available to give the bust a lift while imparting a smooth texture.
Even if you wax, you’ll still want to keep a razor handy for those quick fixes. Look for a quality one for a close shave that won’t cut through skin. As a general guideline, let your skin soak for a few minutes bringing hairs to attention before shaving. You may also want to prep with shaving gel containing Vitamin E For hydration.
If you’re in contact with paper, water and chemicals on a daily basis, chances are your skin is a bit on the rough side. Jan Arnold, founder of Creative Nail Design advises, “First, exfoliate to slough off the dead skin cells. Then, while skin is moist, slather on a cream rich enough to compensate for how few oil glands your hands have.” Arnold also suggests a paraffin wax dip at the salon, adding, “Wax enables hydrating ingredients to penetrate deeper.”
