Vine Vera Skincare reviewed a study that was conducted by researchers G.H. Beaton, T.W. Anderson and G. Suranyi and was published in the July edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal. According to the authors of this study, Vitamin C has a huge role to play when it comes to winter illness. The authors studied a total of 2349 volunteers who participated in a 3 month double blind trial between the years 1972 – 1973. They tried to examine the effects that Vitamin C had on the severity and occurrence of winter illness. Moreover, all records of the study were kept and no tablets were taken in the month after the study.
According to the reports of this study, the subjects were randomly assigned eight different treatment routines. Three of these routines were prophylactic-only, two of the routines were therapeutic-only, two routines were all-placebo whereas one routine was a combination.
According to the results of the study, although none of these groups showed any major difference in terms of experiencing the sickness when compared to the placebo group, but the therapeutic and prophylactic routines showed a small effect whereas the combination routine showed a greater effect in terms of the cure. In other words, people undergoing the combination routine experienced a reduced severity of their illness, despite the fact that the extra dosage was only offered on the first day of the illness.
Upon further examination, no side effects of prophylactic doses of Vitamin C were discovered either. There was no evidence of a rebound illness during the following month after the daily supplements were withdrawn. Thus, this helped scientists to suggest that the optimal daily dosage of Vitamin C is less than 250mg and that a larger dosage of Vitamin C might be beneficial for the body during times of acute illness.
